About TODS: What We Do

What we do at TODS

In July 1958, Tenterden Operatic & Dramatic Society was bought to life by amalgamating The Tenterden Players and The Masquers to form the original TODS – that makes this year our big Six Zero! As a society, we are one of many small-scale amateur dramatics organisations in the South East and are proud to be a member of Kent Drama Association (KDA) and the National Operatic & Dramatic Association (NODA).

TODS are proud to produce three shows each year – a Spring musical in February, a Spring play in May, and an Autumn play in October. Traditionally, the Spring musical was a good old-fashioned pantomime up until 1994, when TODS decided to branch into musical theatre. From our first ever musical production of My Fair Lady back in 1994 up to the present day, we pride ourselves on bringing quality and professional-standard amateur dramatics productions to our little town of Tenterden. Our most recent musical productions include Side by Side by Sondheim in 2016, The Pajama Game in 2017, and the wonderfully-received Sister Act the Musical in 2018 which sold a mammoth over 1100 tickets! Our musical for 2019 is Follies by Stephen Sondheim which will be performed from 21st-23rd February 2019 – tickets on sale now!

We annually enter into KDA’s Full Length Play Festival with our Spring play, and are proud to boast of a plethora of awards for individual performances as well as the full-company. This year’s spring play, Haywire by Eric Chappell, won Runner Up in Best Wardrobe Achievement. Our 2019 Spring play will be Habeas Corpus by Alan Bennett – keep your eyes peeled for details!

Our Autumn play is conventionally something a little different – be it a members’ night, variety show or a series of one-act plays, we’ll provide you with some entertaining refreshment from the cold autumnal evenings.

From 1990 to 2003, TODS were privileged to run a youth theatre alongside our three annual adult productions. As of 2020, we hope to reintroduce children’s participation into our productions, starting with our 2020 spring musical.
